What is colitis?
Colitis is a long term and progressive inflammatory condition that affects the colon and rectum. Symptoms typically occur in bouts, prompting the need to be effectively managed. A person diagnosed with colitis may experience ulcers on the lining of the colon which can bleed and produce pus. Other symptoms can include:
- diarrhoea which often contains blood, mucus or pus
- stomach pain
- frequent bowel movements
- extreme fatigue
- loss of appetite
- weight loss.
Severity of the symptoms may vary from person to person, depending on how inflamed the rectum and colon are. For the majority of people, colitis has a significant impact on a person’s quality of life and how they function on a day-to-day basis.
What is Crohn’s disease?
Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory disease impacting the digestive system. While it usually develops during childhood or early adulthood, it can affect people of all ages. Like colitis, symptoms may come in bouts or they may be continual. If they occur in bouts, a flare up can usually occur every few weeks or months. Signs and symptoms that are associated with Crohn’s disease include:
- diarrhoea
- stomach aches and cramps
- blood in your stools
- extreme fatigue
- weight loss.
