What does respite care include?
Respite care is also known as short-term care. It’s designed to provide temporary relief to family or primary caregivers so that they can enjoy a much-needed break without the stress of worrying about their loved one’s well-being during their absence.
We provide respite care in Chadwell Heath, Romford to ensure your loved one is well taken care of, even when you can’t be there. Read on to learn more about what exactly respite care entails and how it can benefit your family.
What is respite care?
Respite care is a temporary living arrangement to ensure a person’s needs are being met when their primary caregiver can’t be there. We welcome residents to enjoy the comforts of our ‘home away from home’, even if it’s just on a short term basis. This can be as short as a 24 hour stay, a few days, or a few weeks.
In addition to a furnished room, the option to partake in any planned events and activities, and a beautifully landscaped garden to enjoy, we also make sure our short-term residents receive personalised care that’s tailored to their specific needs.
Why is respite care important?
The reality is, everybody needs a break every now and again – including caregivers. And yet, many family caregivers experience feelings of guilt for taking time off for themselves. Sady, this often leads to burnout and ultimately, a reduced quality of care. This can leave both you and your loved one feeling unfulfilled, frustrated, and upset.
Respite care reduces the risk of exhaustion by allowing the primary caregiver to rest, relax, and recharge their batteries. It gives them the opportunity to restore their energy while enjoying peace of mind about their loved one’s safety, health, and wellbeing.
As caregivers ourselves, we know full well the physical and emotional toll that caring for others can have over time. This makes it extremely essential to look after your own wellbeing too.
How can respite care benefit my family?
We acknowledge that respite care can come with feelings of hesitation and uncertainty. You may be anxious about placing your loved one in the hands of a stranger. You may feel guilty that you are ‘abandoning’ them. You may worry that you are selfish for taking time off.
However, both you and your loved one could benefit from you taking a break. As we touched on above, taking time off allows you to come back with new energy and vigour. No longer feeling drained or impatient, you’ll be able to once again provide the quality care your loved one deserves.
At the same time, your loved one also benefits. They get to enjoy a welcomed change of scenery, engage in new experiences, and interact with new people – all while having round the clock care.
When you come back together again, both parties will feel a renewed sense of energy and a greater appreciation for each other. Plus, just think about all the stories you’ll be able to swap!
